  NO LONGER AVAILABLE Our popular Tactilator has been redesigned and streamlined into a smaller, more convenient and attractive package. And we have been able to lower the price, too! LTD is packaged into an electronics case less than ½ the size of the Tactilator. The unit runs on 4 AAA batteries making battery maintenance easy and inexpensive. Standard Alkaline AAA batteries will last for at least 50 hours. We have an optional rechargeable batteries/quick charger option available for those who prefer to use rechargeable batteries.LTD presents the same rich signal to the user as the Tactilator. Tactilator and now, LTD, replaces Tactaid II+. It has two vibrators--a high-frequency vibrator and a low-frequency vibrator. However, we have improved both the low-channel and high-channel outputs. Our efficient wide-band vibrator allows us to present both spectral and temporal cues. In the low channel, this includes a rich lowest speaking-frequency signal. Similarly, the presence of spectral and temporal information in the high-channel encoding gives clearer consonant information. The increase in information results in superior speechreading facility. The developments that lead to Tactilator were based on a method of tactually supplementing speechreading, called Tactiling, invented by a postlingually deafened Swedish man. The section entitled "The Story of Tactilator" relates his story and the history of Tactilator. Tactiling consists of placing a hand on a speaker's shoulder with the thumb placed loosely against the side of the neck and produces exceptional speech cues. We have studied the information presented through this method and have designed Tactilator to present the same cues available through Tactiling without requiring physical contact between the talker and the receiver. In order to reduce background noise, the system includes our new Time-Domain Noise Filter(TDNF). To help optimize the benefits of the LTD, we recommend that adults and older children get some formal practice in lipreading. Our Lipreading-training CD-ROM, Seeing and Hearing Speech, is an excellent accessory to the LTD.
